BOOK MARKETING — #2: BOOKSTORES

Your local bookstore(s) can be an ideal place to give a presentation about your book. There are several reasons for this. The first is that you are a “local author”, and this fact is very much in your favor. The second is that the more pre-talk marketing you can do the more the bookstore manager will appreciate your efforts to bring new people into their store. You can never create enough good will with a book store manager!

Here is a list of things to remember BEFORE you give your presentation.

Call the bookstore and find out when the manager will be there. Make an appointment to meet the manager personally. Show them your book and explain to them the niche that it fills and why the positively cannot live without it. As you make a favorable impression remember to ask them if it would be possible to give a presentation.

Please do your homework by checking to see if the store might already have a set time or schedule for author presentations or something similar. If they already have something in place then it’s just a matter of seeing how best to fit in the pre-existing schedule.

Remember to be flexible when arranging a date and time. It’s their facility that they’re extending to you, so you want to be as flexible as possible when presented with dates and times. The easier you can show them that you are to work with can work in your favor in terms of possible future presentations.

Once they give you possible dates or openings check them against a calendar to see what’s happening locally, regionally, even nationally that might conflict with your presentation.
