Article: More publicity ideas for your bookstore talk....

Bookstores #3: MORE PUBLICITY

Also bring 50 or so flyers with you to hand out at your talk. These flyers are how you will make future sales. You will need to put the price of your book, a phone number, an email address, or some way for people to get in touch with you in order to buy your book. You might want to create a discount flyer for your talk attendees. Giving them a discount of 10-25% if they purchase your book at the talk. The level of discount is up to you. Once again be sure to check with the bookstore to find out how they want to handle sales.

Next, once you have the date of your talk you can contact the local radio stations and have them mention your talk as a ‘Public Service Announcement.’ It will qualify as a PSA because it is free, you are not charging any fee for the talk.

You should be able to find local businesses and/or friends who will let you put some flyers on the counters of their stores for interested customers to take.

The more time you have to advertise the talk the better, 30 days is great.

At the time of the talk go for pizzaz! Make up little give away things that you can give to people just for attending your talk. There is this great web site called www.Orientaltrading.com where you can pick from thousands of small inexpensive items to give away. It’s a wonderful way to connect with your attendees and get something into their hands. I know it may sound rather like pop psychology but there is an effect that is created when you give someone something for free. It does not depend on the value of the item given but comes from the very act of giving itself. People, generally, feel obliged to return the favor. In this case it means feeling obliged, albeit subtly, to purchase your book.

Invite as many of your friends and family to the talk as is possible. This will create the aura of ‘something’s happening here’ and excitement that will help elevate the entire mood of the room.
