Book Cover Design
There is a very well known saying; “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” This pithy saying is meant as advise against what seems to be the tendency of human nature to jump to conclusions based on initial impressions. Unfortunately, in the marketplace, which in this case, is the bookstore, judging a book by its cover is more the rule then the exception.
Most book buyers browse the shelves looking for something, which will grab their attention. Something which just ‘jumps off the shelf’ into their hands. I have heard this expression many times.
It is a very fortunate circumstance when the book buyer is looking for your title, which contains the specific information they are searching for.
Then there’s the Internet. We’ll talk about that later.
So this leads us to your particular book cover with its entire innate draw of attention and curb appeal. The first thing that you want to race through the buyer’s mind is “This looks interesting!” Often referred to as “the sex appeal of the cover design”.
- How much attention will it attract?
- Can it keep that attention?
- How compelling is the design and its presentation?
- Will it lead your consumer to open the book and read through it?
- Will it ignite the magic of the sale?
The first thing that I am going to strongly suggest is that you seek a professional to help you with the design of your cover.
Why?
Because the book’s cover is one of the most important aspects of the book. It is the first thing people will see. The physical cover design IS what people will judge your book by. It is their first impression.
Since you only have one opportunity to make a first impression, don’t take chances.
Put it in the hands of a professional. A professional is someone who has experience designing book covers. It is someone who is in the trenches every day. It is someone who has the experience of knowing what’s out there and knows how to design a cover.
This is short list of just some of the elements involved in creating a successful cover design:
- Color usage
- Type placement
- Type size
- Image placement
- Busyness
- What is it you want people to know about the book
Here at One World Press we’ll take care of all of this for you!
